FAQs
What should I expect my first session?
I will do a brief intake form and get to know you. Massage is not safe for all medical conditions so it is preferred that you speak with your healthcare provider if you have any questions. We will go over any areas you may be experiencing pain and/or tightness so I know what to address during the massage.
After the intake I will step out of the room to let you undress to your comfort level and get under the covers. I will knock before re-entering and beginning the session. After the massage I will leave the room again and give you plenty of time to get dressed. Massage can make clients lightheaded due to moving fluids around the body. Please take your time to sit up slowly before standing and walking. I will have a glass of water waiting for you when you come out of the room. It is recommended to drink plenty of fluids to eliminate lactic acid.
What do I do during a massage? Where do I put my arms?
Lay in a comfortable position. I almost always ask clients to start face-down. You can put your arms on the table, hanging off the table, around your head, etc. I will move your arms/legs/etc. as needed. Your job is to relax and to tell me when you need more or less pressure. If you want to talk, that is OK. If you don't want to talk, that is also OK. This is your massage and I want you to be happy and relaxed when you leave.
How often should I get a massage?
Every body is different. Every situation is different. If you aren't having pain on a regular basis, then once a month is usually enough. If you have a condition that needs to be addressed then I suggest you start with once a week and eventually taper off to once or twice a month.
Do I have to listen to whale calls or flutes during my massage?
Once again, this is your massage and I want you to enjoy it. I currently use Pandora for music. I can put any station on that you like, even Metallica if it relaxes you. Also, you are welcome to use your ipod/iphone and connect it to the speaker. Don't hesitate to ask.
Do I have to be completely undressed?
You will be under a cover and sheet at all times. The only area that will be exposed is the area I am currently working. You are welcome to leave your underwear (not bra please) on if you prefer. If you need glute work then it is preferred that you do not have underwear on, however I can still work around them.
When should I NOT get a massage?
Since massage moves fluid throughout the body, it is never a good idea to interrupt a healing process. This goes for illness and inflammation (including sunburn). The first trimester of pregnancy is another time that you should let your body relax. Also, if you have a skin condition that is contagious or irritable it is best to cancel the massage or avoid that area completely.
What if I need to cancel my massage?
I ask that you cancel more than 12 hours in advance, in order to not be charged for your massage. I understand there are times when it is unavoidable and we can talk about it on a case-by-case basis. You may cancel online or by phone.
What if I am running late?
I schedule appointments 30 minutes apart to allow for a little tardiness. I always try to accomodate when I can. If it becomes a habit, then the appointment time will need to be evaluated.
